Local family receives 'green' makeover
CMR Construction & Roofing Installs a Decra Stone-Coated Steel Metal Roof.
Wall Homes and hundreds of volunteers completed a new home in Keller for the Augustin family as part of ABC-TV's Extreme Makeover: Home Edition show last month. There were lots of stars around – from the show's host Ty Pennington and his crew to Texas Rangers pitcher Kevin Millwood, who worked on the house for six hours and posed for celebrity photos. Yet the real stars of the new two-story home went largely unseen when the cameras were rolling. They include thick foam insulation, tight ducts, Low-E energy-efficient windows, a 20-SEER Trane air conditioning system and an advanced water distribution system. The old home was torn down and the new one built in 106 hours, but the builders did not skimp on things like extra foam in the walls. As a result, the home is one of the most energy-efficient ever built in north Texas. "We wanted to pull out all the stops to build an absolutely green and energy-efficient home," Wall says. Independent energy auditor Tex- Energy Solutions rates the Augustin home very high. "The results [of our testing] put this home in the top 1 percent of all the homes we have tested in the last two years," James Brauer with TexEnergy Solutions says. In the hustle and bustle of getting everything done, [Wall] contractors performed exemplary and built a very efficient home. " As a result, the Augustins will have low utility bills as compared to other homes the same size, Wall says. In addition to being energy efficient, the home is well sealed, trapping almost 100 percent of dirt and dust particles. The ventilation system will dilute indoor air contaminants. And the filtration system will remove most of the very small remaining particles. The Augustin home is one of the first in North Texas to have Trane's new XL20i heating and air-conditioning units. These units feature two-stage cooling and heating, which prevents interior temperature swings. Wall, who formed his homebuilding company in 2005, is one of the leading green builders in North Texas. Wall builds homes in 40 neighborhoods throughout Texas. "Wall Homes was one of the first volume builders to commit to our program," says Phil Crone with the Green Built North Texas program, which maintains a standard for green-built homes. "So the company is no stranger to ambitious projects. " Many of the green-built features Wall built into the Extreme Makeover: Home Edition show home can also be found in Wall's homes in North Texas. The exception is the donated Trane 20-SEER air-conditioning unit. Wall normally installs 14-SEER heating and air conditioning units, he says. "It is important to get people to understand that a little more costs up front for energy-efficient features will produce a lot ofsavings throughout the life of the home," Wall says. Peter and Amber Augustin and their three children, Wall says, will enjoy a healthy, comfortable and energy-efficient home for years to come. The show will be broadcast this spring.
